Rad Women Worldwide: Artists and Athletes, Pirates and Punks, and Other Revolutionaries Who Shaped History by Kate Schatz has just arrived at the Ridley High School Library! The book’s forty mini-biographies, which represent all seven continents, describe the lives and accomplishments of truly radical women in lively, conversational profiles. Each chapter is accompanied by an iconic papercut portrait, created by illustrator Miriam Klein Stahl using paper, pencil, and an X-Acto knife.
Check out the map on the book’s front endpapers to orient yourself to this journey through time and around the world:Then page through Rad Women Worldwide to learn more about contemporary women such as Malala Yousafzai, Venus and Serena Williams, and primatologist Biruté Mary Galdikas. Read up on Enheduanna (the world’s oldest known author), Hypatia (the first known female mathematician and scientist), Queen Lil’uokalani of Hawaii, and so many more. No matter what country or century they’re from, these women are passionate, purposeful, and powerful. Be sure to stick around for “The Stateless” on pages 94-95, a poetic ode to the world’s 60 million displaced people (almost 80% of whom are women and children).
One small complaint: if the map and Table of Contents included keywords such as Educator, Environmentalist, or Musician next to each woman’s name, Rad Women Worldwide would be even more accessible to browsers and researchers. Nonetheless, it will inspire you to read more, to learn more, and to be a little bit more rad! It’s a natural companion read to Schatz and Stahl’s 2015 collection Rad American Women A-Z, as well as Rachel Swaby’s Headstrong.

I just made room on the shelves of the Ridley High School Library for The Curated Closet by Anuschka Rees! She’s got a degree in social psychology, and in this unique how-to book she pairs the science behind how we make decisions with her minimalistic approach to personal style. Whether you’re a long-time fashionista or a total beginner, this book will teach you to curate your closet, with a lot of fun and a little self-discovery along the way. The Curated Closet philosophy is simple:
- Be selective.
- Be authentic.
- Aim for quality.
- Style trumps fashion.
- Put in the work.
Using these principles as a guide, Rees provides tips, techniques, exercises, and prompts designed to help you cultivate a strong personal style and build a functional collection of clothes that allows you to express yourself. “A great wardrobe is like a well-oiled machine,” Rees writes. “Interrelated parts work together, allowing you to mix and match freely and create a ton of different outfits that all suit your personal style.” Over the course of twenty-one brief chapters (complete with beautifully stylish photographs) she addresses discovering your personal style, building your dream wardrobe, and the art of shopping. I especially enjoyed the Closet Diagnostics flowchart, which directs the reader through a series of questions toward a particular tip and/or chapter to help cure what ails your closet. The Curated Closet will be especially beneficial for any student trying to figure out what to pack for college, how to fit everything into a tiny dorm-room closet, and how to maximize a limited budget. Don’t miss Chapters 11 and 14, on outfit formulas and capsule wardrobes; the two-week outfit plan (pages 146-147) will get you through the semester in style! You can also apply Rees’ minimalist lifestyle philosophy to other aspects of your routine. Remember, it’s not about having as little as possible. It’s about owning (and doing) the things that add happiness to your life!

Photographs from the Edge: A Master Photographer’s Insights on Capturing an Extraordinary World by Art Wolfe (with Rob Sheppard) has just appeared on the horizon at the Ridley High School Library! Following a preface by co-author Rob Sheppard and an introduction by Art Wolfe, the book is broken out into four main sections: the 1980s, the 1990s, the 2000s, and the 2010s. Each section incorporates Wolfe’s best photographs from that time period, with a detailed explanatory essay as well as “The nature of the photo” and “Photo tip” sidebars accompanying each image. Photographs from the Edge is so much more than a collection of beautiful photographs; it’s a travelogue, how-to guide, history lesson, and career blueprint all in one stunning book. As you turn each page, you will discover a window to some of the true wonders of the world. Wolfe’s photographs will transport you visually, geographically, and culturally to places you have (probably) never been or even heard of!
Having recently seen the movie Everest, I was especially fascinated by Art Wolfe’s breathtaking images of mountain ranges around the globe, from Alaska to Ecuador to Nepal. Modern Potluck: Beautiful Food to Share by Kristin Donnelly has just been served up in the Ridley High School Library! The author created this eye-catching new cookbook “to give people updated, foolproof, crowd-pleasing recipes that will hold up on the buffet table and are also just a little bit impressive.” True to its subtitle, Modern Potluck is full to the brim with absolutely beautiful food that’s designed to share.
Modern Potluck is organized in a traditional fashion, with chapters dedicated to snacks, salads, slow-cooked dishes, casseroles, side dishes, and sweets. My favorite feature is the introductory section on “Rules of the Potluck.” Here, Donnelly presents helpful lists of what makes a great potluck dish, what hosts should know, and what guests should know. Her suggestions for potential potluck themes are inspired: global street food, your grandmother’s favorite recipe (your way), local pride, stand the heat, and more. There’s also a note about food safety, an especially important consideration for potluck food that may spend hours on a buffet table.
Most recipes are accompanied by full-page, full-color photos like the spice-roasted carrots with lentils that appear on the book’s cover. There’s also a helpful “Potluck Prep” tip for each dish, as well as a note about which recipes are gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian. Donnelly features some truly inventive recipes:
- No-Bake Sweet Pea Enchiladas with Sofrito and Seeds
- Samosa-Filling Stuffed Poblanos
- Smoky Squash Mac & Cheese
- Kimchi and Kale “Caesar” Salad
- Spiced Carrot and Goat Cheese Strudel
- Plum-Ginger Coffee Cake with Coconut
The only downside? Well, as you might have guessed already, these recipes aren’t really designed for beginner cooks. But whether you’re a first-time foodie or a potluck pro, you’ll find a mix of motivation and inspiration in this book’s delectable pages.

If you enjoyed Lab Girl by Hope Jahren and Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science — And the World by Rachel Swaby, your next must-read has arrived!Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World highlights the contributions of fifty notable women to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from the ancient to the modern world. Each two-page profile features a whimsical portrait, a quote, and a brief essay about the scientist’s life and legacy. This format makes the book perfect for both browsing and research. Here’s an example:
On her website, Rachel Ignotofsky writes that she hopes to “use her work to spread her message about education, gender equality and scientific literacy.” With Women in Science, she is off to an excellent start! These essays provide a strong entry point for learning about each woman (some of whom risked everything in the name of science), as well as expanding your overall knowledge of scientific inquiry and research. A timeline and special chapters on Lab Tools and Statistics in STEM enhance the text.
