Student Book Review! The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown

Reviewed by Mike M., Grade 10boysboat

The book starts off with the life story of main character, Joe Rantz. It goes through all the ups and downs off his life and how he ends up on Washington University’s freshman rowing team. It shows how the team bonds and becomes one. It also illustrates how they take on their season. They realize that the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany, which, at the time, was under the power of Adolf Hitler, was rapidly approaching, and the team realizes that they can achieve something very special, bringing home gold for the USA. The book takes the reader through the incredible journey of their brutal training to become an elite team, and then their going into hostile territory to become champions. I really liked this book from top to bottom. I enjoyed reading every page of this book; it really was a page turner. The author included Joe’s rough upbringing and he quickly became my favorite character. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in sports, historical events, or the 1936 Olympics. Thank you for reading.
