Author Visit with Elizabeth Wein!

On Friday, September 20, Ridley High School hosted an event with Elizabeth Wein, award-winning author of Code Name Verity (2012) and Rose Under Fire (2013).

ImageStudents from the Emerald Academy, the 9th Grade Team, and Mrs. Boyce’s 5th Block Senior English class packed the Board Room to capacity. Ms. Wein talked about how she knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, showing the audience a picture of herself at age seven, using a typewriter to create a story. She displayed Code Name Verity‘s American, British, and Canadian book covers and asked students to share their reactions to the different cover images. Ms. Wein also spoke about how she became inspired to write about pilots, spies, and best friends serving together in World War II. She encouraged any aspiring authors to write about topics that they are passionate about, to work with a writing partner to stay motivated, and to explore writing in many different genres. As always, our students made an excellent, attentive audience and they contributed many thoughtful questions to the Q&A portion of the event. Mrs. Wein said in a Tweet to Ridley High School, “You were all wonderful! Loved every minute!” Special thanks to Children’s Book World in Haverford, PA, for making this event possible.
